Charles de Costers Ulenspiegel kommt wenige Jahre nach dem Bauernkrieg in Flandern zur Welt. Sein Till ist nicht einfach der Possenrei\u00dfer, sondern seine rasanten Abenteuer unternimmt er im Ringen um Gerechtigkeit. Das Buch schildert den Freiheitskampf der Flamen gegen die spanische Herrschaft im sechzehnten Jahrhundert. Es ist die Zeit der Inquisition, des Krieges in den Niederlanden f\u00fcr die Reformation und gegen die Spanier. \u2039Ein unvergessliches und unverg\u00e4ngliches Werk\u203a hat Stefan Zweig de Costers Roman genannt: es stehe einsam und \u00fcberragend in seiner Zeit. Es ist ein Volksbuch ohnegleichen. Ulenspiegel wird 1527 geboren und fast zeitgleich Philipp II., Sohn von Karl V. Im Buch gibt es immer wieder Gegen\u00fcberstellungen der beiden: Philipp werde ein Henker werden, Ulenspiegel aber werde unsterblich und jung durch die Welt ziehen, prophezeit die Nachbarin Katheline, die im Buch eine besondere Rolle als Vorherseherin \u00fcbernimmt und damit auch der Verfolgung ausgesetzt ist. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner besch\u00e4ftigte sich in Bildern mit dem Epos und schrieb 1923: \u2039Ach, unserer Generation ist doch durch das Verbrechen des Krieges alle Lebensfreude vergiftet, das einzige, was bleibt, ist die Kunst. Sie steht \u00fcber und jenseits der Nationen und ihre Sprache wird \u00fcberall verstanden.\u203a<br \/>\nDie soziale Ungleichheit zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts war enorm, und besonders die l\u00e4ndliche Bev\u00f6lkerung \u00e4chzte unter der Last der Abgaben und Frondienste. Mit dem Siegeszug der Reformation bildete sich besonders im deutschsprachigen Raum eine Protestbewegung, die vor allem von Bauern getragen wurde. Mit der Niederschlagung der Bewegung wurde auch das kulturelle Umfeld der b\u00e4uerlichen Aufst\u00e4nde weitgehend ausgel\u00f6scht \u2013 auch die Musik der Aufst\u00e4ndischen wurde unterdr\u00fcckt und vergessen. Doch haben sich Reflexe dieser Musik erhalten, nicht zuletzt im Volkslied. Musikalische Zeugnisse von Vorl\u00e4uferbewegungen des Bauernkrieges finden dabei ebenso Ber\u00fccksichtigung wie solche, die aus der sp\u00e4teren Besch\u00e4ftigung mit dem Aufruhr hervorgegangen sind, etwa in der Musik des 17. Jahrhunderts.
